All U.S. states have their own systems of conservation categories and their own laws about how to protect species that are thought to be at risk. In Michigan, species are assigned one of five categories. If a species is considered endangered or threatened in the state of Michigan, then state agencies have to help protect those species and their habitats. States usually also try to help species that they think are of “special concern,” to keep them off the endangered or threatened species lists.
