Kids' Inquiry of Diverse Species

Local animals in this group:

larks

Alaudidae

Most of the 91 species of larks are found in the Old World. More than half of all lark species are found in Africa but smaller numbers of lark species are found in Europe and Asia. One species, horned larks, is native to North America and some species have been introduced to other parts of the world. Larks are sparrow-sized birds that live in open habitats, such as grasslands and deserts. They mostly hop along the ground looking for seeds, insects, and fruit to eat, they only rarely perch in trees or on other structures. Many larks gather in large flocks and migrate seasonally. Larks are best known for their complex and beautiful songs.
